Garden Club

2015 Schedule - Contact  Jill Toop for additional information and details.  GCToopT@aol.com

Meets the 3rd Friday of each of the following months: March, through June, and August though November.

April 17- For the 2nd year in a row I was unable to contact the herbalist and have crossed her off my list. Our second choice was a tour of Ivy Creek Natural Area and Butterfly Garden in Charlottesville. This is the only activity not yet firmed up. I have been waiting to hear back from the coordinator there and will “stay on it” until resolved.

May 15, 10AM- We are scheduled to visit the Quarry Garden in Schuyler, referred to in the January issue of Blue Ridge Life. Bernice Thieblot, owner, will be giving the tour. We on the mountain have a great deal of rock to contend with and the planning committee thought it would be interesting to visit Bernice’s already-established home gardens as well as the rock quarry she and her husband are planning while it is in progress. Bernice is a Master Gardener and a member of several area garden clubs, including Nelson County’s. Husbands may be interested in visiting this one! Lunch place tbd – perhaps in Scottsville.

June 19- This is our local service project and will consist of simple maintenance at the Wintergreen Mountain Reflection Garden (with focus on control of Asian stilt grass). I am away for this so Marti Szczur (or, if necessary, someone appointed by her) will lead. The time to meet will be determined by the temperatures expected. Assume some time between 9 and 10 AM. Lunch will follow at the Devil’s Grill.

July- no meeting

August 21, 10AM- Anna Marie Mizell will conduct a flower-arranging lesson at Chestnut Springs pool pavilion. Unfortunately, I am away for this one as well. Jo Ann Armstrong has kindly volunteered to be the contact for this.

September 18, 11AM- We will be touring Edible Landscaping located just north of Nellsyford. The tour will place emphasis on edibles which can be grown in containers on the mountain – to include fruits etc. Since I was unable to obtain the herbalist, in April, there will be some emphasis on herbs and how to successfully grow them. Lunch place to be determined.

October 16, 10AM- This is the annual seed exchange and social with a member of the plant propagation team there to instruct us regarding identification and seed propgation of native wildflowers. Meeting place tbd.

November 6, 10AM- NOTE: THIS IS NOT OUR USUAL MEETING DATE!!! This is our holiday craft workshop and will be held here on the mountain. This year we will be creating a fall table centerpiece. In order to give everyone a chance to actually use the centerpiece before the winter holiday decorations take over our homes, we have changed the date from the 3rd Friday to the 1st Friday. As far as we can tell, there are no other mountain activities yet scheduled for that date. JoAnn Armstrong has graciously offered the use of her heated garage for this. Lunch afterwards will be pot-luck at JoAnn’s.

December-February - We do not meet
